Namib Sand Sea: World Heritage Site

The Namib Sand Sea was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List on Friday 21st June 2013, giving international recognition to a unique landscape of exceptional beauty.

The Namib Sand Sea  World Heritage Site falls entirely within the Greater Sossusvlei-Namib Landscape. It is the only coastal desert in the world that includes extensive dune fields influenced by fog. It encompasses a unique environment in which  endemic invertebrates, reptiles and mammals adapt to an ever-changing variety of microhabitats and ecological niches.

A conservation model

Landscape level conservation in action: addressing imminent threats to habitat and species loss at landscape level.

Our vision is to manage the Greater Sossusvlei-Namib Landscape for enhanced landscape and biodiversity conservation, and socioeconomic development, for the sustained benefit of the people within the Landscape and the Region. We operate an effective co-management approach whereby there is high-level consensus amongst all stakeholders.

Previously, the landscape was part of NAM-PLACE: an initiative to lift conservation barriers and advocate for the establishment of a network of protected landscapes.
